Grand Lake St. Marys 3-28-08

Thank you for waiting for such a long over due report. I always want to give a great report to make people want to come to Grand Lake to fish and this Sping was a little disappointing. When my loyal customers come in from Dayton they always want to get the latest, and when I tell them, I see a little disappointment, but catching fish is not all there is to fishing. I see friends that are mostly there to spend time with their fishing Buddy or their kids. Fishing is relaxing and is just plain good therapy and gets you back to nature and slows things down a notch so you can enjoy all those things mentioned.

I tend to write these reports around the success of our Crappie fishing, but fact is that all other fishing has done prett good. Crappie fishing is definately our most popular by far. It seems to be what most people make the trip for. but we'll cover them all and maybe you'll change your mind as what to fish for and you might have a happier day at the lake     Actually, early spring was pretty darn good, nice big Crappies and pretty good numbers and we really thought this was the turn around year for the Crappie. Seems like a spawn never happened the way it should and things in the Crappie department really slowed down. Now the best reports that we hear are that Crappie are being caught in the late evening, in the channels, with minnows fishing fairly shallow, about 6 inches. Also under the spillway in the calm water off to the side before the current really gets going.

As alawys, the Catfish seem to bite almost constantly. There are times when they lay down for a shot period, but usually with a little work, changing baits and/or  moving around, you can usually come up with a decent catch. Night crawlers sell the most, shad works the best, shrimp does real well and chicken livers are worth taking too. Every weekend we have people come in with 50+ catfish. Night fishing does the best it seems.

I know this one will be hard to believe, but the Bluegill have been fantastic. The numbers have been great and the size has been too. Usually here the Bluegills don't get all the big, except for the occasional big one but this year big Gills have beena plenty. Ice jigs with a wax worm in shallow rocks and weeds do well. If you have kids fishing the Bluegills will keep them busy, thats a pretty safe bet there.

We saw 2 Walleye that were caught in the lake that weighed in at 9 1/2lb and 10lb!!! Yes I said in the lake!! They are there so lets find the way to catch these fish  here. I'm saying, trolling, keeping the bait constant at 3 to 4 feet deep, with a rattle, like a Rapala or minnow with a rattle. As always if you catch any Walleye please bring them in for a picture and a dozen free night crawlers.

The Bass have been doing fairly well all year. A coulpe off Tournament days were slow but over all the guys have been doing pretty good. They tell us that they are hittig on almost anything, just fish with what you do best.

So really I guess the fishing here is not as bad as I let on. But we are known for our Crappie and thats what people want, so when they aren't biting it puts a damper on us. It's like the Walleye not biting at Lake Erie but everything else is doing good!! And if you adjust to what is hitting you will have a happy productive time.   Oh, and this if Friday June27th, check the weather before you go out, we have gotten as much as 3 inches around the lake. The water is high but it has been a lot higher, don't let that keep you home. and in this report, I can't say that there are any hot spots or that one side is better than the other, just find a place that looks good to you and good luck.   Thanks for your time, now make time for yourself. Have a great 4th of July, Celebrate our great county, thank our Vets, pray for those that are serving, and enjoy your family.
