German Immigrants & Migrants in Ohio FB LIVE

May 11, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Auglaize County Historical Society will host a presentation entitled “German Immigrants and Migrants in Ohio: Patterns, Processes and Landscapes” by Dr. Timothy Anderson as a Facebook LIVE event on Monday, May 11, at 7 pm on the organization’s Facebook page (Auglaize County Historical Society). The event is free and all are welcome.

Germanic immigrants and migrants played an important role in the early, formative settlement of the Northwest Territory. This program addresses the historical settlement geography of three Germanic migrant populations in rural Ohio during this era: Pennsylvania-German migrants from southeast Pennsylvania in central Ohio; Old-order Amish and Mennonites in northeast Ohio; and German immigrants from northwestern Germany in western Ohio (a special focus of the May 11th program).

States Historical Society administrator Rachel Barber, “Dr. Anderson has visited Auglaize County several times in the past decade, so we’re pleased he will return to speak ‘virtually.’ In addition to being a great scholar about German immigration, he is a wonderful speaker and is certain to engage the audience.”

Dr. Timothy Anderson is an associate professor in the Department of Geography at Ohio University. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Geography from the University of Oklahoma, and a doctorate in Geography from Texas A&M University. His research interests include the Historical Geography of the United States, Cultural Landscapes, and Landscapes of the German Diaspora. He is a member of the Ohio Humanities Council’s Speakers Bureau.

Founded in 1963, the Auglaize County Historical Society collects, preserves, interprets, and shares the history of Auglaize County, enriching lives by connecting people and communities to the past and to each other.
